IKO was founded in 1951 as a manufacturer of building paper and in 1954 began manufacturing asphalt shingles. IKO entered the European market with a shingle plant in Ham, Belgium in 1972, and entered the U.S. marketplace in 1979.
Today IKO supplies roofing products to 96 countries around the world. The company employs over 3,500 people and has more than 25 manufacturing plants in Canada, the United States, England, Belgium, Holland, France and Slovakia.
IKO invites qualified professionals to become ShieldPRO Plus members. Membership benefits include staff training, listing on the IKO website, access to online tools, sample materials, rebate coupons and rewards, and discounts on selected goods and services including hotel accommodations and vehicle purchases.
To be accepted in the program, contractors must be professionally licensed and insured, with good credit for a minimum of three years in business. Contractors are required to average at least 1 roofing job per week, provide at least one customer review and photo of completed work per year, and promote the sale of upgraded roof shingles on jobs.
IKO residential shingles come in a wide selection of colors and are available in 4 lines: Premium Designer shingles, which mimic the look of natural slate tiles or cedar shakes without the maintenance worries and cost; the Performance, which is reinforced with ArmourZone to provide protection against wind uplift, water penetration and other hazardous weather; Architectural shingles, which is IKO’s most popular asphalt shingle; and the Traditional 3-Tab, an affordable choice for weather protections.
IKO’s warranty varies according to shingle type, with the warranty period ranging from 240 months to a limited lifetime warranty. The company also offers a high wind warranty and an algae resistance warranty.
